Voluntary teaching in rural Nepal for 8 months

17-06-2019

What will I be doing?

I have been selected by Project Trust to volunteer in Nepal for 8 months starting January 2020. I'm heading to join a community in the far west of Baglung District  which I'll be living in for the following 8 months. While I'm there I will be teaching English and ICT  to grades 1-10 (ages 5-18) to GCSE equivalent exams.  All the schools really struggle with the level of spoken English;  thats why the need for teachers in these communities is evident, and the knowledge and enthusiasm the volunteers bring is so valuable. Since knowledge about English and ICT is so important in the children's later lives, it is necessary for them to learn these subjects. They will have the possibilty of accessing a much wider range of opportunities and find their way better in society. I'm over the moon that I will be able to make such an enormous positive difference in these children's lives and give them an improved and more valuable future.

Something about Nepal

Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia and home to over 29 million people. It is located mainly in the Himalayas and borders China in the north and India in the south. Nepal has a diverse geography, including eight of the world's ten tallest mountains, including Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. It's home to a wide range of cultures, traditions and religions. Because Nepal used to be very inaccessible, it has retained its old culture and has managed to preserve its ancient and unique civilization. This is accompanied by massive poverty and many diseases, underdeveloped social facilities and an economy based on agriculture. There is a huge demand for teachers, particularly in rural areas. The under-resourced education system means that less than half of primary school children enter into secondary school.

Project Trust

During these 8 months overseas I will be supported by the charity Project Trust.  Project Trust is an educational charity sending school leavers to work voluntarily in over 20 countries within Asia, Africa, Latin America and Oceania since 1967. Project Trust aims to empower young people to become responsible global citizens and make a positive difference to their overseas host communities, as well as being able to share their experiences and understanding when they return home.

Fundraising!

In order to be able to partake in this life changing experience and find myself living, teaching, learning and contributing to a community in Nepal,

I have to meet a fundraising target of £5500 (± €6500).

This is a big amount of money; but with your help it is possible! I will also be organising numerous events, which I will keep you up to date with on my blog.

Any donations -no matter how big or small- would mean the world to me and help me on my way to this amazing adventure.

If you like to donate, you can transfer the money to the following account:
